You’ll discover the vast fungal communication networks in forests at boot-level and beneath\, how fungi are adapted to our fire-dependent environment\, and how they can help forests recover from fire. \nYou’ll also learn about the largest fungus in the world\, located nearby in the Malheur National Forest. \nAbout the Presenter \nAriel Cowan is an assistant professor of practice and regional fire specialist with the OSU Extension Service in Deschutes County. Cowan’s experience in mycology began at the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science & Forestry. Since then\, as a biologist\, researcher\, stewardship forester and wildland firefighter her work has focused on fungal ecology and forest health. DESCRIPTION:Trail Love is a community event that COTA hosts to gather folks to come out for a day of collective trail work. The riding season has just started and the moisture in the soil allows for great trail work conditions. Sullivan takes us on a tour of new or dramatically changed trails in the area between Bend\, Salem\, and Eugene\, featured in the newly released edition of his guidebook\, “100 Hikes: Central Oregon Cascades.” Included are reopened trails impacted by fires\, alternatives to trails requiring permits\, and new hikes near Sisters\, Springfield\, and Albany. Along the way\, expect anecdotes about local history\, plants\, and outdoor lore. \nSullivan is the author of six novels and a dozen books about Oregon\, including the popular “100 Hikes” series\, “Exploring Oregon’s History\,” and “Oregon Favorites.” His journal of a 1000-mile hike he took across Oregon\, “Listening for Coyote\,” was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission as one of Oregon’s “100 Books\,” the 100 most significant books in the state’s history. \nThis event is Free.
