SUMMARY:Nature Night: Long Memory of the Land
DESCRIPTION:**Note: This event is full. You can join the wait list!** \nNature Nights are back! Join Deschutes Land Trust for a winter talk designed to bring you in from the cold so you can get your nature fix before spring. \nThe Warm Springs\, Wasco\, and Paiute people live by the Unwritten Laws of their respective nations. Join Deschutes Land Trust and The Museum at Warm Springs Executive Director Elizabeth Woody to learn about some of the long-lived creeds and ceremonial codes the Warm Springs people hold in relation to the land. Elizabeth will share examples of Tiichám which describes the land\, our earth\, as the Long Memory of the land\, including the understanding of a relationship from the Creator to the people. The Tiichám says\, “the land is for you. This is the past\, the present and the future.” It always was and always will be. She will also share the Twanat which says “you must follow the teachings on the land” and offer these creeds as a model for how we can all care for the land.

SUMMARY:Sentenced for a Season\, Punished for Life
DESCRIPTION:Many of us have grown up being told—and believing—that after a person serves their sentence for a crime\, the slate is wiped clean. Every possibility exists for them to find a decent job\, a decent apartment\, a decent car. From there\, they can go on to build a decent life. But the truth does not often bear out this scenario. A felony conviction can restrict travel options\, licensing options for employment\, housing\, and financial aid\, just to name a few. What does it mean to our society that 8 percent of our overall US population—and 33 percent of African American men—who have felony convictions run into these barriers after they serve time in prison? Join facilitator Pamela Slaughter in a conversation about how this reality affects our communities and what alternatives might look like. \nAbout Pamela Slaughter: Pamela Slaughter is a native Oregonian with varied interests. She works as an adult protective service investigator for Multnomah County and is a licensed real estate broker with Keller Williams Realty Portland Central\, working as a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES). Pamela also serves as BellaOnline magazine’s Senior Issues editor and hosts a weekly writing group—Shut Up & Write! Pamela loves showing off the beauty of Oregon and gets to do so regularly as a coleader for People of Color Hike! In her spare time\, Pamela spends time with family and friends\, and bakes delicious cakes. \nThis program is made possible with support from Oregon Humanities\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.Co-organized by Nancy R. Chandler Visiting Scholar Program\, COCC’s Diversity and Inclusion Office and COCC Madras Campus. \nWith support from: Oregon Community Foundation\, St. Charles Health System\, Cascades Academy\, Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund and Associated Students of COCC.

DESCRIPTION:In 1992\, in the midst of riots sparked by the acquittal of police officers who brutally beat him\, Rodney King asked\, “Can we get along?” This iconic American question still resonates today. How do our personal experiences contribute to—and have the potential to break down—these barriers? Join facilitator Chisao Hata as she holds space to examine our individual and collective questions on race\, perspectives\, and cultural values around what brings us together and what separates us. This conversation may include some hands-on activities. \nMonday\, March 9\nCOCC Redmond Campus\, 6 p.m.\nRSVP here \nTuesday\, March 10\nCOCC Prineville Campus\, 5:30 p.m.\nRSVP here \nAbout Chisao Hata\nChisao Hata is an artist educator\, dance director\, arts integration specialist\, community activist\, and performing artist. For over two decades through her work in education\, she has been a protector of imagination and personal discovery\, and a champion for individual expression. Creating engaged learning for our youth\, our citizen artists\, is her life’s work. She has had the honor of serving hundreds of Portland’s children\, youth\, and adults across many communities. Chisao believes that we are all inextricably linked and the arts are our conduit to build bridges between our communities.

SUMMARY:Caucus to Collectivity: Dismantling Racism from a White-Identified Perspective
DESCRIPTION:How is our practice a resource for moving into the world rather than avoiding it? How can our love of humanity be the ground from which we address racism\, injustice\, and oppression? \nIf you identify as white\, how can we fully see our role in maintaining systems of oppression so that we may let them go? So we may all know our inherent liberation. \nNo one wins in this system. \nIf our practices don’t offer a way to work with this\, then we are maintaining the privilege of ignoring and/or bypassing what marginalized populations can not ignore or bypass. \nThis day of retreat is specifically designed for those who identify as white. The practice of identity-based caucusing is vital in fostering a collective community that honors inclusivity and belonging\, and de-centers a harmful hegemony. There are important conversations for white people to have\, accountable to BIPOC individuals\, aimed at dismantling racism. Only when white people are ready to do the work of confronting the myriad of emotions\, attitudes\, behaviors\, and actions that stem from internalized white supremacy will we be able to forward a just\, equitable society of collective presence. \nJoin these four white-identified teachers for a day of practice\, embodiment\, discussions\, and action-planning about committing or re-committing to a practice rooted in love rather than alienation\, awareness rather than ignorance\, and engagement over apathy or burnout. Led by Caverly Morgan\, Suniti Dernovsek\, David Perrin & Latifa Till

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Chlorpyrifos is an insecticide that damages the brains of infants and children\, and can cause neurological harm\, cancer and other serious impacts. Unsafe levels of residues are found in drinking water and common foods such as beans\, vegetables and fruit. Research overwhelmingly shows that chlorpyrifos kills and harm bees\, butterflies\, and birds and is a serious threat to our food\, public health\, and wildlife. \nHawaii\, California\, New York and Maryland have taken action to ban or severely restrict chlorpyrifos. Oregon must take action\, but the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s proposed rules on chlorpyrifos need to be stronger! We need your help to pass effective rules. Please send your written comments or speak at one of two remaining virtual public hearings in August. If you can’t make it to one of those hearings\, see below for public comment details\, our policy analysis and suggested talking points. \nThere are two easy ways you can get involved: \n\nAttend one of the scheduled virtual public hearings: \nAug. 27\, 2020\, 8-10 AM\n(Real-time Spanish translation provided.)\nSubmit your written comments to the ODA record by October 1st.\nRead suggested talking points->>

SUMMARY:Food Justice at the Intersection of Food\, Politics\, Art\, and Culture
DESCRIPTION:How can we create a world in which all Americans\, regardless of income\, geography\, or race have access to healthful\, fresh\, affordable\, and culturally appropriate food? In this interactive talk\, Bryant Terry will take us on a journey of his more than two-decade career as a chef\, author\, publisher\, and community builder committed to creating a healthful\, just\, and sustainable food system. From grassroots organizing to book publishing\, Terry has employed cultural strategy\, a field of practice that centers art\, storytelling\, media\, and cooking (in Bryant’s case) to bring about social change. Through a dynamic presentation that includes singing and rapping\, and fusing personal narrative with food politics\, Terry will show us how to improve access to fresh food in our communities — whether that community is your campus\, workplace\, neighborhood\, or your group of friends. \nRegister here!
