Learning Garden
Overview of our plans for the Kansas Avenue Learning garden.
The goal of the Kansas Avenue Learning Garden is to embed sustainability in local schools by providing students regular access to learning garden through which they can learn first hand the connection between food and the environment through integrated academics and direct experience in the garden.
Kansas Avenue Learning Garden
The empty lot adjacent to The Environmental Center has been transformed into a learning garden. Through partnerships with a small local elementary school down the block during the school year, and our local Boys & Girls Club around the corner during the summer, we can connect children to that basis of all life – food. We envision this garden as a place where children tend to the seeds they plant, make discoveries through weekly observations and experiments, extend the classroom outside with applicable math and science skills, and get their hands dirty. Here they can witness and experience cycles, growth, hard work, weather and patience. Here they can leave the 4 walls of their classroom and come into the classroom of life within the support of community.
