Transportation

This page describes The Environmental Center's work to create sustainable transportation policies and infrastructure in Central Oregon.

A key part of a sustainable future for Central Oregon is ensuring that we have a balanced transportation system that provides safe, reliable, and convenient alternatives to driving alone.  Those alternatives include walking, biking, car pooling and transit.

Our vision for a sustainable transportation system in Central Oregon includes these elements:

  • A regional transit system that serves need and choice riders.
  • Sidewalk, trail and bike lane networks that connect all neighborhoods and commercial centers within each community.
  • Biking, walking and carpooling to school and work are common practices.
  • Support for the policies and funding needed for the system comes from a diverse coalition of citizens, community organizations and businesses.

Our current work focuses on transit.  Two of our staff are involved in advisory committees related to improving transit services regionally and developing long-term funding solutions.

In the Fall of 2010, we plan to expand our efforts by digging into the policy and funding obstacles to biking and walking and developing an action plan to address them. And we also plan to begin work on building a sustainable transportation coalition.
