Recent Accomplishments
Highlights of our 2010 accomplishments in each program area.
Sustainable Youth and Schools
• In the 2009-2010 school year, we had 8,063 student contacts in 37 different schools in every school district in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson County.
• In 2010 we coordinated a comprehensive sustainability education and planning process for Bend La Pine Schools and Bend Park and Recreation District. As a result, both organizations are very close to adopting comprehensive sustainability plans to guide their operations.
• We broke ground on the Kansas Avenue Learning Garden for kids. The garden will give students a piece of the natural world to plan, create and care for.
Zero Waste
• In 2007 we initiated a Zero Waste Events campaign in response to the lack of recycling and composting at community events. Our model was so successful that this year local waste collectors took over recycling and composting services for community festivals with our support and consultation.
• For the last two years, we have been working cooperatively to expand composting opportunities. In October of this year, our local recycling company responded with a new food waste composting service for all commercial customers. This new service is an important first step towards a comprehensive composting system for the entire community.
Sustainable Business
• Despite the weak local economy, The Green Spot—Central Oregon’s directory for sustainable living—continues to thrive, giving more people access to information and resources to take sustainable action in their daily lives.
• We honored a local citizen, a small and a large business, a nonprofit organization and a government agency at our inaugural Sustainability Awards in October 2010. By honoring winners at a public event, we hope to inspire more sustainable action in our community.
