Film Line Up:
A Year in the Desert: Anza Borrego, 15 mins
Chris Pyle, Nicholas Clapp
Each season in the Anza Borrego desert has its special creatures: tiny hummingbirds, darting lizards, slithering snakes, head-butting bighorns. Their land is seared by ground temperatures of 180 degrees, swept by a flash flood, even blanketed by a snowstorm. Yet they not only survive, but thrive.
Flathead Wild, 23 mins
Trip Jennings, Andrew Maser
In July 2009 the International League of Conservation Photographers sent a Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE) to the Flathead River Valley in British Columbia. The team of photographers, scientists, local conservation organizations, and cameramen documented the beauty and the destruction of this area, which is threatened by mountain top removal and methane drilling proposals.
The Story of Cap & Trade, 10 mins
Free Range Studios
Annie Leonard tells the story behind one of the most talked about solutions proposed to combat climate change: carbon trading. But is carbon trading a real solution, or just a dangerous distraction? Annie looks at the controversial issue in a head-on, matter-of-fact, and provocative way that will open your eyes and make you think twice about this supposed silver bullet.
Zoologic, 5 mins
Nicole Mitchell
It’s a humorous story of an overzealous zookeeper who meets his match in a penguin and gorilla who lead a comic revolt against him.
Split Estate, 15 mins
Debra Anderson
Imagine discovering that you don't own the mineral rights under your land, and that an energy company plans to drill for natural gas two hundred feet from your front door. Imagine having little recourse, other than accepting an unregulated industry in your backyard.
Brower Youth Awards: Alex Loorz, 5 mins
Earth Island Institute
Alex Loorz, 15, of California, the youngest presenter of Al Gores The Climate Project and the founder of SLAP, Sea Level Awareness Program, to educate coastal Californians about sea level rise and global warming.
A Simple Question: The Story of STRAW, 35 mins
Kevin White, David Donnenfield
Simple hope and inspiration can be found in the Stemple Creek Watershed of Northern California. In 1992, a fourth grade class-project began what is now a remarkable program restoring over 20 miles of habitat, galvanizing the local community, and leading to significant educational innovations.
