The best way to get in shape for climbing season is to climb. Join us for an easy climb up Mt. Bachelor to test out any new gear you may be using this season.
Directions to Start: If you'd like to Carpool, meet at the east end of the Mt Bachelor Park & Ride off at Colorado & Simpson in Bend. Otherwise meet outside the Sunrise Lodge on the southeast side (look for skiers putting skins on). Sunrise Lodge is the first turn off for Mt Bachelor (not the West Village).
Outing Description: As the spring climbing season approaches, get in shape by ascending Mt Bachelor. Go as far as you want; head down whenever you're ready.
Equipment & Clothing Needs: Snowshoes or a telemark or alpine touring set up with skins is recommended. Downhill skis and boots with snowshoes will also work-carry the skis on a pack going up, put the snowshoes on the pack going down. The latter option is more work, but the ski down is just as sweet.
Layering clothes is the key to staying comfortable. You'll want to have enough clothes to stay warm while waiting around and resting, but you'll also want to have light clothes to stay cool on the climb-polypro tops and bottoms with shorts work great. A waterproof shell and pants are must to stay warm in "moderate" winds (Bachelorese for hurricane force).
Bring at least two liters of water and some food.
Skills, Experience & Fitness Level Needed: The climb is not technical. The ski from the summit to the top of rainbow chair requires solid intermediate skiing ability. From Rainbow chair down is easy intermediate to beginner in difficulty. If you are uncertain of your skiing ability, you should stop at Rainbow chair on your first time up.
Maximum Number of Participants & RSVP Requirements:
No limit on participants (lots and lots of parking!)
