WATERWISE TIPS
FTGU has partnered with both the City of Bend and the City of Redmond to deliver the WaterWise Program to participants.
Tip
#1: Water Early in the
Morning
We
recommend that people try and water in the early morning
between the hours of 6 am and 10 am. This is when the winds are
the lightest and the temperatures are cool, but not
cold. Due to our climate here in Central Oregon we
tend to have winds pick up in the afternoon and watering at
this time of day will lead to water blowing on your neighbor's
yard, not yours.
Tip #2: Grasscycle Your Lawn
Clippings
By
leaving your grass clippings on the lawn, you can provide up to
1/3 of your fertilizer needs and those clippings will not end
up in the landfill.
Tip
#3: Use Compost to Top Dress Your
Lawn
Top
Dressing of lawns is beneficial. It encourages new basal growth
of the grass plants - giving a thicker sward of grass. Top
Dressing is also a good way to 'level out' the bumps and
hollows in an uneven lawn.
Top
dressing is normally carried out in mid spring. It can be done
at any time in the growing season (March-October), but a
dressing in the spring soon 'disappears' under the resultant
lush lawn growth. The type of top dressing mix to be used
varies according to your basic soil type.
